Family_Playing_With_Bubbles

Melbourne’s East is an excellent place for families to enjoy some quality time together. There are plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained, from visiting the Healesville Sanctuary to taking a scenic drive through the Yarra Valley. And what’s more, many of these activities can be enjoyed without spending a lot of money!

So, if you’re looking for some fun things to do with your family in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs, be sure to review the seven recommendations put together by our team at Noel Jones today.

Make Some Furry Friends at the Healesville Sanctuary

Healesville Sanctuary is a zoo dedicated to a unique collection of beautiful Australian fauna, set among bushland in the Yarra Ranges. There are plenty of opportunities to get up close and personal with some of Australia’s most iconic animals, as well as learn about the efforts being made to protect them. Guests can enjoy animal encounters like the Dingo Close-Up event, Platypus Discovery, or even a VIP Sanctuary Tour. Open every day between 9 am and 5 pm; make sure you pop in for a visit and say hello to some new furry friends!

Indulge Yourselves at the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery

The Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery is a must-visit for any sweet tooth (of all ages). As well as being able to see how the chocolate is made, there’s also a chance to sample some of the delicious creations on offer, and even workshops to take some new skills home with you.

What’s more, the location is also something to behold on its own, with rolling green hills, sweeping blue skies, and even some animals on hand to greet you! With events popping up all the time and open every day between 9 am and 5 pm, this is a perfect day out for the family.

Spend a day at the Puffing Billy Steam Railway

The Puffing Billy Steam Railway is a heritage steam railway that runs through the Dandenong Ranges. It’s a great way to see some of the stunning scenery in the area, and kids will love riding on a real-life steam train.

Journeys include:

  • Belgrave to Lakeside Return Trip
  • Belgrave to Menzies Creek Return Trip
  • Lakeside to Gembrook Return Trip
  • Belgrave to Gembrook Return Trip

Once here, you can also expand your experiences with carriage hire options, picnic packs, steam & cuisine luncheons, and the Menzies Creek museum. Local passes and gift vouchers are available, so make your booking today!

Go to the Moonlight Cinema in the Park

Although not located in Melbourne’s East, but rather in the heart of Melbourne city, we just had to include this activity as it is a summer favourite for all ages! Set amongst the stars in the unmatched Central Lawn of the Melbourne Gardens, the Moonlight Cinemas have cemented themselves as a family favourite for many years now. As the sun sets over the city and the inflatable screen begins to illuminate, families huddle together on comfortable blankets or hired seating to watch either the latest releases or some classic favourites we are always up for seeing again.

The Moonlight Cinemas only run for a limited time during the warmer months, so be sure to make the most of them while you can!

Take a Walk Or Bike Ride Along the Dandenong Ranges

The Dandenong Ranges offer plenty of opportunities for exploring, with an abundance of walking and biking trails to choose from. Immersing yourselves in the sloping forestland is an excellent way to get some fresh air, take in the stunning scenery, and be introduced to some chipper local wildlife, such as wallabies and lyrebirds.

If you are feeling especially energised, you may even want to tackle the famous (or infamous) 1000 Steps, before progressing on to behold the Olinda Falls and sweeping views of greater Melbourne and the Yarra Valley.

Go for a Swim at One of the Many Outdoor Pools in the Area

With so many outdoor pools in Melbourne’s East, there’s no excuse not to take a dip! Whether you’re looking for a place to cool off on a hot day or just want to enjoy some time in the water, there’s sure to be a pool that’s perfect for you nearby.

If you want to elevate your experience in the water, there are also a range of water parks and activities to explore, including:

  • Seville Water Play, Seville
  • Ruffey Lake Park, Templestowe Lower
  • Halliday Park, Mitcham
  • Emerald Lake Wading Pool, Emerald
  • Aquanation, Ringwood
