5 Things to Consider Before Adding an Ensuite

It’s a well-known fact that having an ensuite is a luxurious addition to any home and will grab a buyer’s attention immediately. So, whether you’re updating an old and tired room or adding an entirely new space, ensure your ensuite is functional, practical and elegantly designed with the help of these top-renovating tips:

  • Firstly, think about who will be using the room and what is needed from the space. If it’s simply for guests and won’t be used frequently, go for mid-range rather than high spec fittings, and opt for ceramic tiles over budget-busting porcelain designs. However, if you’ll be using the ensuite daily and require more of a deluxe retreat, it will pay to splash out on well-constructed, hard-wearing fixtures, such as designer taps and innovative non-porous porcelain, that will take a lot of wear and tear and can be easily maintained.
  • Whether you’re giving your old space a reno or starting from scratch, the key to adding value to your home is to create an ensuite that’s timeless and appeals to all tastes. Avoid following trends and adding grand gestures such as gold taps, particularly if this doesn’t flow with the rest of your home’s style. Instead create a modern, sophisticated look with neutral tones and warm textures that won’t go out of date. Then opt for fittings that have an enduring charm, such as a smart vanity unit, elegant wall lights or mirrored storage cabinets, and you’ll have an ensuite that’s practical as well as inviting.
  • Consider whether you really need a tub in your already-on-the-small-side ensuite. There’s no doubt that a contemporary freestanding bath would create an instant wow factor, while a built-in bath provides extra storage thanks to its handy ledge. However, if you already have a tub in the family bathroom, do you really need another one in the house? By ditching a tub in favour of a luxurious walk-in shower – think streamlined floor tray, stunning glass screen, and invigorating rainfall showerhead – you will recoup well-needed space and add an instant spa-like feel. But if a relaxing soak in the privacy and tranquillity of your own ensuite still captures your heart, then why not go for the best of both worlds with a modern over-the-bath shower, and cover all bathing options.
  • Adding a new ensuite doesn’t always require extending your home, European-style bijou washrooms can be squeezed into almost anywhere (obviously with the help of a little plumbing). Maybe you have an airing cupboard or part of a hallway that can be repurposed, a spare bedroom that can be sub-divided, or space under the stairs that can be converted? Consult with a builder and plumber and you may be surprised about the space-enhancing opportunities within your home.
  • If you are expecting to put your house on the market in 2-5 years time, renovate now! ย Not only will a clever renovation add thousands to the value of your home, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy all your hard work!
