Colour of the year 2020

Colour is everywhere, it permeates all our lives in some way or another. So it is always interesting to read about which colour is declared the “colour of the year.” It will influence a lot of what we see in furniture and homewares as well as fashion in the coming months.

This year, Pantone, the world’s most influential colour institute, announced that “Classic Blue” will be the trend forcaster’s choice for 2020.
They say “It is a colour that instills calm, confidence & connection. This enduring blue hue highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build, as we cross the threshold into a new era.” A fitting colour to start off a new decade.

In this high stress, fast paced world, Classic Blue evokes trustworthiness, credibility and constancy. Blue represents a vastness of the sky and a calm ocean, it can be an anchor for us in times of turbulence. There is also a sense of optimism in the hope that one day that the world will come together and be at peace.

Psychology of the colour blue
Blue in general is the most favoured colour the world over. It is unique and versatile and it is linked with creativity and calming qualities. It is viewed as a dependable colour which is why you see a lot of professions use it in their logos or uniforms, think the Police and ambulance.

Ways to work with classic blue in your home
Apart from the obvious that is paint, we can add touches of the calming hue to many areas of our home. Why not have your favourite ocassional chair upholstered in a lively patterned classic blue fabric? Blue is such an easy colour to work with in interiors and teamed with crisp white it is a timeless classic colour scheme.

In your kitchen you could bring in a blue coloured glass splashback or even a blue free standing stove for a real statement. For more subtle hints of the colour look for a blue kettle or toaster that brings in a sense of fun.

Take the classic blue colour outside too by introducing a blue adirondak chair in your garden or even paint your front door in this calming hue.
Wherever you are this year, make sure you look out for the appearance of Classic Blue, it will be everywhere!
