Insights from The Block – Why Bigger is Always Better in a Master Bedroom

bedroom renovating

Does size matter? When it comes to master bedroom renovations, the answer is a resounding yes!

Master bedrooms are increasingly being seen as a sanctuary away from the chaos of the rest of the house, an ‘adults only’ zone where parents can relax, and a calm space for deep, rejuvenating sleep.

To achieve a true sanctuary, a master bedroom needs to be spacious and well planned. Ideally, the master bedroom should be part of a master suite, with a luxurious ensuite and sizeable walk-in robe completing the picture. If there’s space left over for a retreat area, even better.

Once you have a vision for your master suite, it’s time to determine how to build it. Possibilities include removal of internal walls, adding onto your house’s footprint or building upwards to create a luxurious upstairs retreat.

Luxury is the name of the game when it comes to master bedrooms. Think restful colours, plush carpets, high-quality curtains and luxurious bed linen. Wallpaper is a popular way to add a high-end touch to a master suite; covering just one feature wall with designer wallpaper is an easy way to add ‘wow’ factor.

Ensuite bathrooms are increasingly being viewed as an essential element in a family home. While in the past ensuites have often been squeezed into tight spaces, a well-planned and generous second bathroom will add certain value to your property. Carefully consider lighting, tiles, and tapware to give the room a polished look. If you have the luxury of space, consider a statement stand-alone bath or oversized shower with rainshower and hand-held heads. A double vanity could also be invaluable for couples who need to get out the door at the same time every day.

Storage is key to keeping master bedrooms ordered and relaxing.  Walk-in or walk-through robes are highly desirable, providing a much larger area for hanging and storing clothing, shoes and accessories than traditional free-standing cupboards or built-in robes. There may even be space for a handy fold-away ironing board or large hooks to hang tomorrow’s outfit on, giving you a head start in the morning.

Keeping your laundry basket and storage boxes in your robe will help keep your master suite clear of clutter and help to create the relaxing vibe you desire.

Obviously, creating a luxurious master suite will come at a cost, but if like The Block contestants you plan to sell in the near future, it is an investment well worth making. Even better, your home will be a pleasure to live in until the time comes to sell.
