If you’re looking for a village lifestyle in a suburb that allows room to breathe amongst a backdrop of open green spaces and bushland surrounds, then Blackburn (including North and South) is sure to make a wonderful first impression.

The picturesque Blackburn Lake Sanctuary is the most significant park in the City of Whitehorse, spanning 74 acres and featuring a variety of flora and fauna, walking tracks, picnic areas and a fabulous playground. In the late 19th century, many artists including prominent Australian painters Tom Roberts and Fredrick Mc Cubbin painted in the bushland around this area, discovering the beauty that has continued to entice people for well over 100 years, and making the area surrounding it arguably one of the most tightly held pockets in the Eastern suburbs.

Housing

Blackburn offers a range of housing options; there are modest yet charming post-war homes, large garden allotments occupied by sprawling family homes, new architecturally designed contemporary houses and townhouses, plus the recent arrival of stylish urban apartment buildings, predominantly in Whitehorse Road and the Blackburn Train Station precinct.

Schools

Many residents have grown up in the area and having loved it so much, they have decided in turn to raise their own families here. Quality schools such as Blackburn High School which is renowned for its excellent music and arts program, plus a variety of state-run and Catholic primary schools ensure that a good education is easily accessed.

Parks and Recreation

A variety of parks, walking trails and successful sporting clubs guarantee a place for people of all ages to enjoy the outdoors and physical pursuits. Local favourites include Blackburn Lake, Furness Park, Cootumundra Walk, Gardiners Creek Trail, Eley Park, Wurundjeri Walk and Koonung Reserve; the Blackburn Panthers Football Club and Blackburn Vikings Basketball Club enjoy regular success within their nominated leagues.

Shopping

There are 3 main shopping precincts in Blackburn; Woolworths and the strip shopping in Canterbury Road Blackburn South, Blackburn North Shopping Centre with 2 supermarkets and a variety of other retailers and the heart of Blackburn Village, across from Blackburn Train Station, where you’ll find a local IGA supermarket and an abundance of cafes where neighbours and friends love to meet.

The other local area boasting gourmet cafes and fresh food is adjacent to Laburnum Train Station. This has been a popular meeting spot for many years with the railway station bringing a great deal of passing foot traffic. Buses also frequent the area and provide quick links from both the North and the South to trains that will have you in the CBD within 20-30 minutes.

This is a green, leafy suburb that truly caters for all ages with a strong focus on family, lifestyle, and community.
