Wantirna Suburb Profile Suburb Profile

Wantirna Highlights

  • Highly sought-after schools
  • Convenient access to Eastlink Freeway
  • Excellent public parks and recreation spaces
  • Family focused ‘square reserves’

First settled in 1840 when Mrs. Madeline Scott established the ‘Bushy Park’ cattle run on the banks of the Dandenong Creek, Wantirna and its neighbouring suburb Wantirna South provide some of the most family friendly and amenity rich living options in the Eastern suburbs.

Long term residents of the area have seen a host of exciting changes since the beginning of the new millennium.

Housing

Wantirna traditionally consists of family homes on great sized parcels of lands, renowned for its family friendly spaces. Wantirna is unique to many other suburbs in their use of ‘square reserves’ – which are essentially cul-de-sacs that loop around a small reserve in the middle of the court that quite often has play equipment for local families. These create a safe space and environment for local children to play outside, right in front of their own homes where they can be watched by their parents.

The majority of homes in Wantirna are brick veneer and were built from the mid-1970s up to around 1990. They consist of a mix of three, four and sometimes five-bedroom homes on blocks of land ranging from about 550m2 up to and over 750m2.

Transport

The opening of Eastlink in June 2008 saw the accessibility and popularity of Wantirna rise. This made the suburb more convenient for buyers in suburbs such as Doncaster East and beyond to locate Wantirna and realise the potential of the suburb. It also meant that those working in the city could more easily travel to work and enjoy weekend getaways to the Mornington Peninsula, Dandenong Ranges and the Yarra Valley. Westfield Knox City provides a thriving transportation hub that help commuters travel anywhere in Melbourne on the many bus routes.

Shopping

Knox City Shopping Centre recently underwent a $150M refurbishment, with the most notable change being the addition of Knox O-Zone—the first of its kind in the eastern suburbs. The space offers a wide variety of eateries, a large cinema complex and entertainment venues, making it a popular destination for those of all age groups. Wantirna is also serviced by the long-standing and community loved Wantirna Mall. Located in the famed ‘Golden Triangle’ the Mall has all the amenities a resident needs for day to day living including the Noel Jones Wantirna office.

Parks and Recreation

Those who enjoy physical pursuits are well catered for with many significant locations such as Lewis Park, Egan Lee Reserve, Llewellyn Reserve, Jells Park, Lakewood Nature Reserve, Knox Skate Park and Walker Park allowing for participation in both organised or self-led activities. Koomba Park which is a large native bushland park between Dandenong Creek and the Eastlink tollway caters for those who enjoy walking or bike riding as does the Blind Creek Trail which is another pleasing alternative.

Amenities

Adding to the vast array of amenities are a variety of reputable schools, with The Knox School, Waverley Christian College and Templeton Primary School being amongst the areas most popular; you will also find the eastern campus of Swinburne Institute of Technology on Stud Road. A strong network of public transport service the area, as does Knox Private Hospital, which recently underwent a $180M upgrade and expansion, making it the second largest private hospital in the state.

The capital being injected into the area speak volumes; Wantirna and Wantirna South are suburbs that have been sculpted to cater for the needs of people at every stage of life. Come and see how they can enrich your future.
