Health and happiness while at home

Health and happiness while at home

During this Melbourne lockdown, it is easy to let our health and wellness slide. That extra serving of ice-cream, an all-night (or day) binge on Netflix, or spending hours idly scrolling through social media can be a welcome distraction from the strains and boredom of isolation. But if we prioritise our health we can all get through the next few weeks in much better shape, mentally and physically. Here are some simple but effective and achievable health solutions, helping us to manage a reassuring smile under those important face masks.

Get outside to exercise
Not only will fresh air invigorate you, but with any luck the sun will shine down and reward you with vitamin D, which is clinically proven to lift our mood, helping ward off those โ€œiso bluesโ€. So, whether it is a walk, run, skip or a jump, get outside and take advantage of the wonderful parks and green spaces in our municipality. Regular exercise should be your best friend; it helps weight management, provides anxiety and stress relief and supports your immune system.

Healthy eating
Comfort eating has its place โ€“ chocolate may be the new loo paper when it comes to stripped supermarket shelves โ€“ but donโ€™t underestimate good nutrition for mental health. A colourful array of fruit and vegetables, as well as nuts and seeds, whole grains, omega-3 rich fish and fermented foods are top choices to fuel your body and mind and have you rearing to tackle another day at home.

Connect with loved ones
While we are unable to visit family and friends, it is important to stay in touch. Technology allows us to check in and catch up, whether that be on the phone or through web chats such as Zoom or Skype Alternatively, switching off the screen and writing a letter or making a homemade postcard can be fun and therapeutic โ€“ it will also probably make the lucky recipientโ€™s day.

Make time for things that bring a smile
Do something that makes you happy. With work, home-schooling and keeping a tidy home all competing, time for you can be forgotten. Whether itโ€™s putting on a favourite song and dancing, trying a new activity (online yoga, anyone?) or dressing up in your favourite outfit (bye-bye tracksuit!), some fun helps us keep our sanity and see the lighter side of life.

In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, โ€œIt is health that is the real wealth, and not pieces of gold and silver.โ€ This pandemic has us getting back to basics, placing health above all else. Being kind to ourselves, and others, is now more important than ever. Take the time to give some TLC to your mind and body, and youโ€™ll be richer (and happier) for it.
