Home Decor Trends in 2017

2017 started off with a bang and if NAB’s predictions are anything to go by, Melbourne property owners can expect a further 6% price increase this year, off the back of 16% growth in 2016.

In what is a sellers market, vendors who have cemented their roots in one home for multiple decades, are now deciding to sell up and reap the rewards of Melbourne’s property boom.

Reality TV shows such as The Block, Selling Houses Australia and House Rules have been inspiration for many Australians, giving rise to a ‘renovation’ boom. Those who are happy to get their hands dirty can take advantage of a generational shift that is resulting in homes coming on the market that haven’t been touched since the original foundations were laid.

Homes of the ‘Baby Boomer’ or ‘Silent Generation’ typically have great bones but can be perceived as unappealing to the younger generation due to drab and outdated dรฉcorย and ‘boxy’ layouts. Buyers with a keen eye and a renovation budget may see the potential, but for many, especially first home buyers with no renovation nonce, an outdated home can be overwhelming.

To make your home appealing to all buyer demographics when you’re ready to sell, work with what’s trending at the time. You don’t have to spend a small fortune or buy new furniture, instead invest in a quality paint job and hire a home stylist to stage the home for you.

So what’s trending in home dรฉcor this year?

Colour

IN: Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2017 is Greenery. Think ’embracing’ the uplifting aspect of nature, bringing life, peace and calm into your home.

OUT: Bye bye blue, especially navy blue.

Furniture

IN: Darker furniture is on the increase – we’ll see richer and deeper tones in timber furniture and highlights in 2017. These darker tones of wood also work brilliantly with lush, green highlights.

OUT: Pale, blonde woods as inspired by Swedish interiors.

Decor Highlights

IN: Jewel tones and highlights inspired by the stars and the cosmos. Also gorgeous, lush velvet soft furnishings, giving us much-needed comfort. Also earthy cork, warm, welcoming terracotta and handwoven baskets, floor rugs – anything au natural is big for 2017.

OUT: Copper, pineapples and quote artwork.

Tip

For those wishing to update their home without the intention of selling, never buy ‘too trendy’. Buy classic pieces that work well with any of the latest fashions, that way you can mix and match the inexpensive items; such as cushions covers or throw rugs – as they go in and out of style. Lastly, buy items that you actually like or you resonate with. After all, it is your home, your own private sanctuary.
