Surrey Hills & Mont Albert Highlights

  • 13kms east of Melbourne’s CBD
  • a quiet green, leafy backdrop
  • strong transport links
  • village atmosphere with excellent cafes

When people think about Surrey Hills, Mont Albert and Mont Albert North, it is often with whimsical thoughts about the pleasant shady vistas of the Pin Oak and Plane trees, and the beauty of the lovely period homes, mainly influenced by the Victorian, Federation and Edwardian eras.  Many of these have been lovingly restored and a high percentage have had sympathetic additions made to them across the years to provide additional space for families.

Transport, Shopping and Dining

Both Mont Albert and Surrey Hills have their own train stations and surrounding these are popular cafes and shops. The stretch of shops along Hamilton Street is known as Mont Albert Village and its amazing cafes, bakeries, and patisserie make it a popular meeting place; you can then buy fresh produce, sensational meats, and other gourmet food items, browse the specialty shops or run day to day errands. Surrey Hills also offers further strip shopping on the corner of Union and Whitehorse Road.

Schools

There are a number of primary schools in the area and these are a good mix of state schools and Catholic schools. There are 2 secondary schools; Koonung Secondary College and the sought after Box Hill Senior Secondary College which runs elite sporting programs in AFL, Basketball, and Tennis and also has an excellent reputation in the areas of Visual and Performing Arts. These schools are both well serviced by local buses which have links to nearby railways stations or to 2 local tram routes. They are also within close proximity to the Eastern Freeway/Eastlink; you have easy access to the city and in under an hour you could be enjoying the delights of the Mornington Peninsula.

Parks and Recreation

Adding to the family friendliness of the area are the recreational facilities that are close by. Heathway’s Recreation Centre offers a gym, swim school, 10 pin bowling and a variety of specialty programs whilst Elgar Park hosts a number of sports and has a great children’s playground; it is also adjacent to the popular Box Hill Miniature Steam Railway. Koonung Creek with its walking/cycling trail is a pleasing addition and has connections to a variety of other trails either city-bound or to the east.

These are suburbs where you can enjoy a peaceful family lifestyle amongst leafy green streets, with the peace of mind that you have access to an abundance of restaurants, large shopping centres and entertainment in neighbouring suburbs; those who live here really do have the best of both worlds.
